I really enjoyed reading An Unhappy Medium! Although the first quarter of the book is slow, containing a lot of backstory that fans of the series will already know, the book is a lot of fun to read.
Grace, Paul, and Sophie come to visit the rest of their family. Seth (Grace and Paul’s son who lives with the main character Clyde) is organizing a zombie run to raise money for the animal shelter he volunteers at. Although he thinks his family is visiting for that, they are really they for another reason. Grace and Paul are in trouble, and Clyde has to figure out how much of it is real and how much is in their imaginations. Meanwhile, Grace’s ex-boyfriend is murdered. Clyde wonders if he was the target or if it is a case of mistaken identity because the ex-boyfriend was wearing the same costume as her husband Paul.
Dawn Eastman kept me guessing throughout the whole book. The mystery was solid, and the antics of her family members just added some comedy to the mix. There is also a romantic subplot between Clyde and Mac as their relationship grows.
If you like cozy mysteries that mix in a little paranormal and humor, you should definitely try the Family Fortune Mystery series. It’s one of my favorites! I give An Unhappy Medium five stars for having a well thought out mystery, strong character development, and an entertaining and cohesive plot.
