IN STILL DARKNESS is a novella in the Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall.

Goodreads lists this as #3.5 in the series. However, the events in the story seemed to cross over books two and three because some scenes were in those books, told in this story from a different perspective. The events start around the same time Ami became Marcus’ second, which I believe was in the second book in the series.

This story was originally published in the Predatory anthology. It was re-released as an ebook.

“In Still Darkness” is told primarily from Richart’s point of view in third person, past tense. Richart saves a woman named Jenna from three vampires. He becomes a little obsessed with her, and visits her repeatedly at her work, even though she doesn’t remember the attack or him.  He woos her, and eventually has to tell her everything.

I really enjoyed reading this story. Richart is so sweet with Jenna. They are both likable characters. Jenna is a single mom of a young man who is in college. I liked that she was a mother and older than many characters in paranormal romance stories. It shows that anyone can find love; age is not that big of a deal.

“In Still Darkness” can be read as a standalone story. It’s not necessary to have read any of the books in the series. Dianne Duvall gives the reader all the information needed to read the story.

Even if you aren’t already a fan of the Immortal Guardians series, I strongly recommend reading this story. I give it 5 out of 5 stars for a believable romance that progresses naturally, fast pacing with plenty of action, and well-developed and likable characters.
