Welcome to Jennifer’s review of BLOOD SECRETS!
Blood Secrets is another book that I read a while back and didn’t ever write the review. Although I still have a lot of those to write, I feel good that I am getting some done.
I really enjoyed reading BLOOD SECRETS. It included a little bit of everything I love: hot romance, action-packed fantasy, and a mystery to solve.
One thing that stood out to me was the worldbuilding. It was original and well-developed for book that wasn’t very long. My only negative observation was that Vivi Anna calls the creatures “Otherworlders” but never explains where the Otherworld is. Where did they come from? The reader knows that the Otherworlders were rounded up to live in Necropolis, but the reader has no clue where they came from in the first place. But, overall, the worldbuilding was great.
Another thing I liked was how the main characters didn’t jump into bed immediately. They were able to be alone in a hotel room together without having sex. That was a nice change!
I also appreciated how well the author was able to stay in one point of view at a time. There wasn’t any head-hopping. Because of the strict point of view, the characters were actually able to misinterpret things. For example, when Caine wiped his hand after touching Eve, she thought it meant something different than what it meant. But, the reader doesn’t learn what it really meant until it switches to Caine’s point of view. I loved that!
The author used my pet peeve of “her sex” to describe parts of female anatomy.
Eve has to be rescued repeatedly. I would have liked her to have a bit more capable.
They are supposed to be CSIs, but they do more detective work than anything else.
A few threads were left hanging at the end of the book, particularly involving the second person who was involved in the murders.
Hooked or not?
Although there were some things I didn’t like, I enjoyed the book as a whole. The pluses outweighed the negatives. I plan to read more books in the Valorian Chronicles series. BLOOD SECRETS was a fun book to read with plenty of action and romance to satisfy all my reading needs.
I give BLOOD SECRETS an A (five stars) for fast pacing, interesting worldbuilding and plot, and likable characters.
If you like books that blend detective fiction with fantasy and romance, you should try BLOOD SECRETS.
