Welcome to Jen’s review of IN THE BEGINNING

“In the Beginning” is a prequel short story to the Phoenix Chronicles series. As of today, it is still available for free on Amazon for Kindle (subject to change).

Even if you haven’t read any of the Phoenix Chronicles series, “In the Beginning” can be read alone. The story is about Liz’s past and how she used her psychic abilities to help solve cases as a police officer. After they failed to save her partner, Mac, her path in life changed.

I liked this story because it helped me see firsthand one of the most important events in Liz’s life, something that shaped who she is in the books of the series. Even if I had never read any of the series, I would have still enjoyed reading “In the Beginning” because it is well-written and fast paced.

Liz is a very likable character. She has some emotional baggage, but she always tries to do the right thing. “If someone died, and I could have saved them, how would I live with myself?” (location 72)

This is another short story that met my standards. The characters are sufficiently developed, the plot makes sense, and there aren’t any huge cliffhangers. I also felt the Milwaukee setting was described very well.

“In the Beginning” is a five-star short story. I loved it and would read it again. Although it’s true that I am a fan of the Phoenix Chronicles series, I believe I would feel this way even if I had never read anything else by Lori Handeland. This story definitely earned an “A” from me. I recommend it to readers who want something quick to read that has to do with cops, psychic abilities, and demons.
