First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros
This meme, hosted by Bibliophile By the Sea, is to discuss the first paragraph of a book. Although I think the meme is supposed to be for books we plan to read soon or are currently reading, I’m just going through books that I own. I like the variety, and I like taking peeks at books I haven’t had a chance to read yet.
This week I picked The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook.

First Paragraph from The Iron Duke
Mina hadn’t predicted that sugar would wreck the Marchio-ness of Harrington’s ball; she’d thought the dancing would. Their hostess’s good humor had weathered them through the discovery that fewer than forty of her guests knew the steps, however, and they’d survived the first quadrilles. But, as the room grew warmer, the laughter louder, and the gossiping more vigorous, the refreshment table set the First Annual Victory Ball on a course for disaster.
Based on that first paragraph, would you keep reading?
I’m not sure if it captures my interest enough. Yes, I want to know how sugar could wreck the ball, but that alone isn’t enough for me to continue reading. If it weren’t for the synopsis of the book and the good things I have heard about the series, I don’t know if I would be compelled to read more.
What do you think? Is that first sentence enough to make you want to read more?
